Title Building Demolition Company Fined by MassDEP for Alleged Asbestos Violations
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, test kits, air monitoring instruments, and personal protective equipment to protect workers and the public, and to help companies comply with health and safety regulations.

Boston, Massachusetts, October 24, 2024

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) recently announced it had assessed a fine of over $35,000 to a demolition company for asbestos-related violations. The agency reports it discovered the violations during a compliance inspection of asbestos abatement activities at a commercial property.

According to MassDEP, the company failed to utilize appropriate methods to contain and minimize releases of asbestos when working on a roof during demolition activities. This led to visible particulate emissions into the environment. This is a major concern as asbestos is a well-known health hazard when fibers become aerosolized. Inhalation exposure can result in mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer. Due to this fact, there are strict regulations when it comes to dealing with asbestos-containing materials.

Every year, numerous renovation, construction, and demolition companies are investigated for alleged asbestos violations in Massachusetts and across the nation. In addition to serious health concerns, these violations often result in costly penalties, legal fees, and damaging public relations.

“EMSL Analytical has an asbestos testing laboratory in Massachusetts, and dozens more across North America, available to help companies comply with health and safety regulations concerning asbestos, lead, and other regulated materials,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “We offer material, environmental, and industrial hygiene testing services. EMSL also provides sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, building inspection tools, and personal protective equipment. These resources not only safeguard workers and the public, they can also be instrumental for compliance efforts with federal, state, and local regulations concerning asbestos-containing materials and other hazardous substances.”
