A public school temporarily closed its doors last month after the City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) announced lead contamination issues in the building. Several hundred students have been forced to use another educational facility several miles away until the lead issues can be addressed.
According to MHD and Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS):
Recent testing identified elevated levels of lead dust in areas that underwent remediation, which does not meet the health and safety standards required for a child-occupied facility serving young children. Given these findings, the school must close while further assessments take place.
Lead is toxic for all people, but this is especially true for young children. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states this is due to the fact that their growing bodies absorb more lead than adults do and their brains and nervous systems are more sensitive to the damaging effects of lead. Young children can also be more exposed to lead because they often put their hands and other objects that can have lead from dust or soil on them into their mouths.
“Dust from lead-based paints continues to be one of the most common sources of exposure for children in the United States,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Lead dangers can also come from drinking water, contaminated soil, and even from a child being exposed to lead dust from an adult’s job or hobby. Fortunately, lead poisoning is entirely preventable. At EMSL Analytical, we have dozens of lead testing laboratories that offer material, environmental, and industrial hygiene testing services. We also offer sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, building inspection tools, and personal protective equipment to identify and mitigate contact with lead, asbestos, mold, and other hazards in the built environment.”
