Title Fire Station Closed for a Second Time Due to Mold Concerns

For the second time in just months, the Charleston Fire Department in South Carolina announced to area residents the temporary closure of Fire Station 12. This second closure was taken following a review by city officials over continued mold concerns.

Charleston Firefighters Association – Local 61 shared the following:

Firefighters should not have to risk their health to serve the community. The fact that this problem has resurfaced so quickly suggests that either the initial response was inadequate or deeper issues exist within the facility that were not properly addressed. 

Mold is a known allergen, irritant, and asthma trigger for many people. Some types of mold can even produce toxic substances known as mycotoxins. There are also species of mold associated with water-damaged buildings that can cause opportunistic infections in people with a weakened or suppressed immune system.

“Whenever there is enough humidity or if water damage has occurred that is not quickly addressed, mold will typically begin to grow on many building materials, furnishings, and even personal belongings within days,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Situations like this, where perhaps the underlying cause of the original mold growth was not fully addressed, or a new source of moisture entered the equation, can be exceptionally frustrating for building occupants, especially for those suffering from respiratory issues or other effects.”
