It was recently announced that over 80% of New York City public schools built with asbestos were not included in mandatory inspections in 2023-2024. This news was released by a new audit from the city comptroller’s office.
It was noted that the city Department of Education failed to inspect 82% of the city’s 1,700 school buildings built with known asbestos carcinogens. Prolonged exposure to asbestos during childhood is known to cause lung disease and cancer in exposed individuals.
