Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month takes place each May, and this year, the 6th of the month is recognized as World Asthma Day. The month is dedicated to asthma control and education to increase awareness about the disease and how those with it can prevent or mitigate exposures to asthma triggers, allergens, and respiratory irritants.

Asthma affects the lungs and causes repeated episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 6.7 of children and almost 9% of adults in the United States currently have asthma. It is one of the most common lifelong chronic diseases.
