Clean Air Month was established back in 1972 and takes place each May. It was designed to be a time to educate the public about the connection between clean air, in outdoor and indoor environments, and respiratory health.
For many people, the quality of the outdoor air they breathe is dependent upon where they live. This limits their ability to avoid certain pollutants when outside. However, the air quality inside homes, schools, and businesses, where most people spend approximately 90% of their time, can usually be more easily controlled.
It’s important to recognize that indoor air quality (IAQ) conditions can be impacted by numerous airborne pollutants. Some of the more common ones include radon, mold, pollen, dust mites, animal dander, cockroach allergens, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, tobacco smoke, particulate matter (PM), asbestos, lead, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, and even sewer gas.
“Breathing elevated concentrations of airborne pollutants can be everything from a nuisance to potentially having a serious impact on one’s health and well-being,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Fortunately, there are ways to test for airborne pollutants so that steps can be taken to eliminate or mitigate any exposure risks. At EMSL Analytical, we offer quick and affordable indoor environmental quality testing services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, building inspection tools, and respirators and other personal protective equipment. These tools and resources can be essential for assessing, controlling, and optimizing conditions in the built environment.”
EMSL sponsored an educational video about Clean Air Month several years ago that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/mw1HtEJqVyU
