Health Canada recently announced the recall of a brand of fishing rod and reel combo kits designed for children. The jig accessory in the kit is reported to contain levels of lead that exceed current Canadian standards.
According to the recall notice:
Lead and cadmium are highly toxic, especially to children. A range of serious health effects have been associated with exposure to lead and cadmium, including anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, serious brain injury, convulsions, coma, as well as effects related to the liver, kidneys, heart and immune system. In extreme cases, there have been deaths. Since lead builds up in the body, ongoing exposure to even very small amounts of lead can result in large amounts of lead being present in the body.
“These fishing pole kits were manufactured in China and sold in Canada between February and March of this year,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Unfortunately, a significant number of products that are imported into the U.S. and Canada, including many made for young children, get recalled each year due to the presence of lead or other heavy metals, such as cadmium. These products can be a real hazard for consumers, especially vulnerable kids.”
Dedicated to protecting consumers and helping businesses avoid costly product recalls are the testing experts at EMSL Analytical. With laboratories located across Canada and the United States, their material and product testing experts are regularly called upon to test for regulated substances, microbial contaminants, and a wide range of other potential health and safety issues.
