National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW) is observed each year to bring together individuals, communities, organizations, industry, and government agencies to raise awareness and take action to reduce childhood exposure to lead. In 2026, NLPPW will be observed from October 25–31 with the theme “Keep Kids Safe from Lead.”
NLPPW is a collaborative national initiative supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This year’s campaign focuses on three key actions: Get the Facts about lead hazards, Get Your Child Tested to help ensure early detection, and Get Your Home Tested to identify and address potential sources of lead exposure.
“National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week is an important reminder that identifying potential sources of lead is an essential part of protecting children and families,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Lead exposure can occur through deteriorated lead-based paint and contaminated dust or soil, but it can also be associated with drinking water, certain consumer products, food, and other sources. Testing can help identify potential hazards so that appropriate steps can be taken to reduce exposure.”
According to the EPA, HUD estimates that 3.3 million U.S. families with a child under age six live in homes with conditions that could expose children to lead-based paint hazards. EPA also notes that even low levels of lead exposure can negatively affect children’s health, making awareness, testing, and prevention important tools for protecting vulnerable populations.
