A manufacturer of consumer products asked EMSL Analytical, Inc., to test for particle size distribution of titanium dioxide in their products. Titanium dioxide is a material commonly utilized as pigment in a wide variety of commercial products such as paints, coatings, paper, plastics, rubbers, ceramics, food, pharmaceuticals, and personals care products. Due to its ability to scatter visible light, it enhances whiteness, brightness, and opacity. Titanium dioxide is listed on Proposition 65 because exposure to airborne, unbound respirable size particles may increase the risk of cancer. The testing can be applied on bulk material or on samples collected with air cassettes during simulated use of the product.
